The Psychological Effects of Cancer on Family Members

When someone is diagnosed with cancer, the focus understandably falls on the patient. But the journey impacts more than just the individual in treatment. The psychological effects of cancer on family members are very real—bringing stress, sadness, financial strain, and even changes in daily routines.

Understanding these effects is important so loved ones can get the support they need, too.

A Study on the Psychological Effects of Cancer on Family Members

Years ago, researchers set out to analyze the psychosocial and psychological effects of cancer on patients’ family members.* They followed 460 patients who had been diagnosed with cancer and surveyed their family members, all of whom were over the age of 20. To compare, they also included a similarly aged control group of people who did not have a family member with cancer.

This study provided valuable insight into the challenges family members face when caring for a loved one with cancer.

The Study Results

In the study, family members of cancer patients reported significantly higher levels of stress and depression compared to those in the control group. Sadness and distress were also reported at higher rates among family members.

This isn’t explicitly stated in the study, but I believe some of this can likely be traced to natural worries about their loved one’s health, uncertainty about the future, and the painful reality of facing questions about mortality.

Researchers found that financial strain was actually a large factor affecting family members’ mental health. Cancer treatments and associated costs often ripple out far beyond the patient, creating additional pressure and distress for those supporting them.

Interestingly, the study revealed a higher level of physical activity in families affected by cancer. Perhaps the presence of cancer in the family shines a light for everyone on the importance of exercise and its relation to our health?

Counseling Can Help Families Navigate the Impact of Cancer

At the end of the day, cancer has a huge impact on mental health – for both patients and their family members or caregivers. But support is available. One of the best things you can do for your mental health is to talk with a counselor. We can give you coping tools, and even just be an ear to listen when you need to vent.

If you’re seeking a therapist who truly understands the impact of cancer, I encourage you to explore my services. I’m a survivor myself and specialize in working with those impacted by cancer specifically. I offer both individual and family counseling, and would love to meet you during a complimentary consultation call.
